Humble Beginnings

Once upon a time, there was a clever child who struggled with math. She could understand math but needed a lot more practice than the average child.

Her father wrote his own problems for her to practice. They helped but took a long time to write (and correct).

He thought it would save time to buy math workbooks for her instead. The ones he purchased were expensive and disappointing. A few weeks later, she was still confused, and he was back to writing problems by hand.

He searched for more workbooks. The kind he wanted didn’t exist. So, he created Humble Math.

Why call it Humble Math?

The word humble was chosen for two reasons.

1. Trying to teach a struggling student is a very humbling experience. It’s difficult for the child and difficult for the parent (or teacher). It can involve a lot of tears, emotions, and torn papers. Avoidance and negative behaviors are common coping mechanisms for struggling students. It’s scary for a child to be in a classroom when they don’t understand what’s being taught. It’s frustrating to go home and practice something confusing. Kids would rather be playing, and parents would rather be doing something fun with their child.

2. When Humble Math was created, it had two core missions. The first core mission was to make effective math resources. The second was to make these resources affordable, so every-day families could use them. Affordability and modesty are closely related, and the word humble is often associated with modesty.

Humble was a suitable word and the focus was mathematics. Humble Math became the name.
